A BIT ABOUT US
Helping Children Impacted by Disasters
Here at Comfort Bears in a Catastrophe, we are driven by a single goal; to provide comfort to children in disasters. Our donations go out to thousands of children impacted by disasters ranging from hurricanes to home fires. We strive to make sure these children receive a bear with a handwritten note of encouragement to bring them comfort and a meaningful friend that's theirs to keep after they've lost so much.
Comfort Bears in a Catastrophe is a fiscally sponsored project by IFERS, a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization, and therefore a variety of donations can be tax deductible.
ABOUT OUR FOUNDER, MIMI HYMEL
Mimi Hymel is the current CEO and founder of Comfort Bears in a Catastrophe. Mimi created this fiscally sponsored nonprofit to help children impacted by disasters to receive comfort. As a survivor of Hurricane Katrina herself, Mimi understands the need for comfort in a disaster, and noticed this need is not being met for disaster victims.
People often donate essential items, leaving kids with no comfort items, and confused. This leads to a decrease in their mental health, and long term impacts in social skills, education and more.
After Mimi lost her favorite teddy bear in the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina, all she wanted was a new teddy bear to comfort her and help her face the trauma from the disaster.
Mimi wanted to step up to the challenge and fill this desperate need for the community. That's where Comfort Bears in a Catastrophe comes in.
